The City of Sanibel in partnership with the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation performed water quality sampling in 35 canals across the island (2019-2020). The canals were ranked from most impaired (1) to least impaired (35) based on sampling results for inorganic nitrogen, total phosphorus, chlorophyll a, and turbidity as these are the best indicators of eutrophication (poor water quality) in southwest Florida estuarine systems.
